Italian Ceramic Deruta Rooster Pitchers
|
The Rooster Pitcher is well known throughout Italy as a symbol of good luck and good fortune. This tradition dates back to before the Renaissance. It is rumored that the legendary crowing Rooster, once saved an entire village by waking the villagers and alerting them to the presence their enemy. This prevented the attack and saved the village. To honor the Rooster, the village held a feast and honored the animal by creating pitchers to hold wine in the shape of the crowing Rooster. This tradition has continued for hundreds of years and is depicted in italian pottery from Deruta, Orvieto, and Florence and even as far south as Sicily. The Rooster pitcher makes a great wedding or housewarming gift. Each of our Roosters comes with a card that details the history and tradition behind these lively pieces. Use these cute pitchers to pour wine & juice, or add it to your rooster themed kitchen decor. These charming pieces can also be used as a great vase for fresh picked flowers from the garden.
